You also must testify, for you have been with me from the beginning. (John 15:27) So he gave them unrivaled opportunities to hear his words and see his works, so that they might later bear witness to what they had seen and heard (cf. 1 John 1:1–3). Especially was it important for them to be witnesses of his resurrection. It was for this that Matthias was chosen, “to take over this apostolic ministry, which Judas left to go where he belongs” (Acts 1:21–26). It is true, of course, that Paul was not
